Data Scientist, UK

Leeds, England, United Kingdom | Analytics | Full-time | Fully remote

This role can be based in either our London or Leeds office

Since 2002, Quantium have combined the best of human and artificial intelligence to power possibilities for individuals, organizations, and society. Whether it be building forecasting engines that materially drive down food wastage or creating tools that combat human trafficking, Quantium believes in using the power of analytics and machine learning for better goods, services, and experiences for a brighter future.

The opportunity

Are you working on data science problems but worried that your solutions may never be productionized? Do you want exposure to clients across a range of different domains? Perhaps you're looking for new and exciting ways to apply your technical skills to make a positive impact. If you are keen to accelerate your career in data science and start working on unsolved, intellectually challenging business problems, then look no further.

Can you share a little more on some of Quantium’s projects?

At Quantium, we seek out complex, technical problems to solve. We leverage extremely large and often disparate datasets in the retail, FMCG / CPG and banking industries to solve problems for our clients that have never been solved previously. These include business problems like optimizing product offerings, personalizing customer interactions, pricing, selecting the best locations for stores/branches or improving inventory forecasting for some of the biggest companies in the world.

These will typically be end-to-end data science solutions, deploying complex models that underpin decision-engines our clients deploy. We work in fast-paced environments on transformational projects with tight timeframes, often teaming up in agile delivery squads. Our projects are diverse, and our solutions have a big impact on our clients’ businesses, shaping the direction of their industries and the experience of the customers they touch.

What will I be doing as a Data Scientist at Quantium?

Many things! Your role will likely evolve as we continue to grow but at its core, the Data Scientist is a technical role that delivers high quality end-to-end analytical support across multiple projects, as a member of a project team.

This will see you helping develop and deliver high quality data science solutions for our clients, from data preparation and cleaning, through to deploying and productionizing models that are embedded in client systems.

As we’re a Consultancy, you’ll get the opportunity to work on projects across different industries and partner closely with clients to understand their needs and help transform their questions and problems into analytical solutions.

What tools will I be using?

Keeping in mind that we always ensure the tools we are using are fit for purpose, for our current projects, we are typically using SQL, Spark or Scala for data preparation and Python and / or R for advanced analytics.

Why should I be excited about this opportunity?

With our UK team being established just over a year ago, this is a unique opportunity to join an exciting, high growth environment where each person can contribute and have a big impact on the success of the team, whilst knowing that you have global capability (proven products and solutions built over 19 years!) to back you.

What is the team culture like?

We are a team of diverse data scientists, consultants and sales professionals working in an environment where colleagues quickly become friends. Working in small, cross-functional project teams, you will have lots of opportunity to learn from senior leaders and share your learning with the team too.

You've mentioned consulting work. Tell me more about the travel requirements.

Our team is committed to growing trusted relationships with our clients. For the current and upcoming projects, you may be required to work onsite at client offices for 50% of your time. We are happy to be creative with travel options to accommodate to individual needs. Our teams are currently based in London and Leeds. Travel depends on where our clients are based, need to be on site and clients’ relative openness to remote work (all teams are remote presently due to COVID concerns).

OK, this is all sounding great. But do you have a bullet point list so I can see if I meet the requirements of this opportunity?

We know people are not bullet points but here we go:

  • Approximately 3+ years of hands-on experience in a highly technical analytics environment, carrying out data science work with large, complex datasets.
  • An understanding of the importance of strong data interrogation skills to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Experience in using at least one of SQL, Python or R and the desire to learn new languages and techniques
  • The ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • A degree in a quantitative discipline e.g. actuarial studies, mathematics / statistics, engineering

It would be advantageous but not essential if you have:

  • Experience building models end-to-end, using techniques such as GBM/XG Boost, GLM (logistic regression), Clustering, Neural nets/deep Learning /deep nets, Multivariate regression
  • Experience working closely with business stakeholders or clients, partnering with them to deliver end-to-end project solutions
  • Experience working within retail, CPG or banking is advantageous
